On Food: “What Really Goes Into a Good Meal?”

CONTENT:

1. The Bay Area food chain, role of toxins and organics, waste, recycling

2. Bay Area’s agricultural operations (Industrial, Organic, CSA) and their environmental challenges

3. Innovative agricultural operations changing the industry, including waste management

4. To learn action options and make a personal action plan:

1) Easily accessible – buying local/organic

2) Direct with farmers – CSAs

3) Grow your own – SF Victory Gardens, MyFarms, GFE

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to

- Describe the shortcomings and challenges of Agrobusiness, food transporation, and lack of a coherent food culture

- Identify available alternatives, such as CSA’s, that overcome these challenges and resources for pursuing alternatives

- Collaborate to set goals for pursuing healthy food systems individually and as a group

INSTRUCTIONS:

- Compile a list of five foods you have eaten over the past few days and try to determine where they were grown and who grew them.

  1. This looks like a wonderful event, though sadly, I cannot attend on the 27th. However, I wanted to let you know of work we are doing, with other organizations and community groups. We are addressing the issue of subsistence fishing in SF Bay and the Delta, and contamination in the fish (with a special emphasis on mercury). Is this something that your program would be interested in?
